Well, I bought the machine knowing that it needed a starter. No biggie. When it cranks, it does this ker-klunk ker-klunk ker-klunk. Once it fires, it runs like a top. So I but a new starter, install it, and ker-klunk. I've never had one taken apart, but from working on cars, I'm guessing that there's some type of flywheel in there. I plan on getting a manual ASAP.

But just for now, until I get a manual, I'm wondering, is anyone else familiar with this sound/problem. If so, how was it fixed, and what does it entail? Is it a "remove a side cover" kinda fix, or am I looking at a "engine on a workbench" kinda deal?

Its not the starter making that noise, Its the starter gear. Mine does it too, to going out. But until it does I'll use it as is, its sorta a PITA job . Not hard to fix just takes a while.

is this something that will require me to yank the motor, or just a cover? I don't wanna wait. The thing sounds like a piece of junk, and I'm already catching grief from my buddies for going with an "outdated" machine. lol I at least want it to look and sound good n tight, dig? I did see a few pictures online of a split engine, and what APPEARS to be the gear I need replaced looks like a side cover job. But I want to be sure.

You don't have to pull the whole engine. You do have to pull the flywheel though.

Rent a flywheel puller or buy one then sell it on here? Not hard. Or make one. I'm sure it would be to hard to.

I'm sure I'll figure that out. If I gotta buy one, I'll probably keep it, though. I love having tools.

My dad and I made a flywheel puller out of a small puller and some flat steel. Just drilled the holes to make the arms further apart. (We only used 2 arms not the 3 our puller had) Then it required the use of longer bolts. Not too hard.

My Warrior makes this sound too, and I had hoped it was normal...crap I guess my gear will need replacement. Oh well I've had engines apart b4 I guess I could figure it out.

yea the one way starter clutch is noisy like crazy when cranking over and it makes that clunk when you shut it off time to time, specially when there worn out, but it usually takes a beating before they poop out, i bought my flywheel puller for like 50 some bucks and its like a necessity imo.

So this causes the clunk also when shutting them off? I might want to replace mine before long since it is making noise sometimes.
