To all you people who have had you starter gear train apart.

My starter gear train seems to be making a little extra noise on my 89 Warrior.
I bought this recently from a guy that claims to have replaced the 1 way bearing. I don't wish to split this engine unnecessarily. I have removed the starter (which is supposed to be brand new) and put my finger in there and fiddled with the gear. The bearing appears to be fine but the gear has some side play, maybe 1/16 - 1/8. Is this normal, or did this guy make a mistake in his reassembly.

TIA

I wouldn't worry about, i think a little play in that gear is normal. Yamaha never really did perfect their electric start systems, its normal even for the newer ones to be a little noisy and clunky.
