I have a 01 yamaha warrior and i put it in the shop recently for a no spark problem, and when i got it back and fixed, i tried to turn it over but when it got to the compression stroke it seems or just a random spot it the starter whines and slows down for a few seconds and then turns over once, i could sometimes get it started by letting it turn over a few times and it would fire on up and run like a champ. so i bought a new starter and put it on and it helped, barely. it just made it turn over slightly better but it still whines pretty badly. also when i take the spark plug out it turns over perfectly. plzz leave any suggestions!! thx

starter clutch maybe? being that he can take the sparkplug out and it turns over fine cuz theres no pressure in there and it lets the starter clutch grab

Thats why Im thinking electrical, pulling the plug means no compression so the starter doesnt need full amps. How old is the battery.

battery is charged solenoid seems fine

Check, clean and lightly dielectric grease all grounds and main connections first. If no improvement, then:

- Battery may be charged, but try it piggybacked with a jumper pack or charger attached and see what happens.

- Solenoid seems fine?
How can you tell?
Try jumping it and see what happens.

If starter performance improves with either check, then I'd probably replace the tested part.

Hard to say without hearing or seeing it but Id guess electrical also. When did you check the battery charge? Was it while cranking or with no load? If you didnt id suggest checking the voltage while trying to crank it. I dont know if theres a spec available for it but theres a min amount of voltage required to start anything. I know on cars 9.6v min while cranking is a general rule of thumb.

battery is less than a month old and i have tryed it with charger on but it still whines, ill try jumping the solenoid in a minute

how do i replace the starter clutch and how much does it cost???

is there anyway you can make a video of what its doing? it would be alot better to diagnose it like that. if the battery and solenoid are good and the starter is fine then dont replace any of that. if the starter turns your motor over and then winds up a little bit then turns over again and winds up im gonna say its the starter clutch. you said that it turns over fine with the plug taken out which would make sense because there is no pressure in the combustion chamber therefore letting the starter clutch grab and turn the motor alot easier.

anyway if it is the starter clutch you have to take the stator cover off, get a flywheel puller and pull the flywheel off. the starter clutch is bolted to the back of the flywheel

ok cool man umm how do i post a video to this website becaus it sounds like you understand exacly what its doin but ill still post one, and i thanks alot for the feed back i really apreciate it

make an account at photobucket and upload your video there. when its finished uploading there should be a little box under it with a bunch of links in it. click on the last link and it should copy to your computer and just paste that link in this thread

can i post it under videos on this site it seems like i can

can i get anyone to second that it may be a starter clutch cuz i dont wanna waste the money if it may be something else
