my 87 motor is lookin sorta rough so i was wondering if there is a special kind of paint that i can use, it has to be black though. i know powder coating is an option but i dont wanna take the motor apart to do it. is there any other way?

Nope, nothing special required.
The key is to get the stuff to be painted CLEAN. I used a very fine wire cup wheel on a 1/4" air die grinder to get down to bare aluminum on the cases. The fine bristles won't gouge the metals up. Sure beats doing it by hand. Rinse with thinner/wax & grease remover/brake cleaner, etc. The result you get out of it is directly proportional to the prep work you put into it.

Krylon primer and paint is recommended. I used semi gloss black for a factory stock look. Well worth the extra $1.24 a can over the cheap stuff.

if you dont use a high heat rated paint your hard work will bake off in flakes..

Yep what they said. I used high temp flat black on my 87 when i rebuilt it. I had it for 3 years and the paint looked just as good when i painted it.

Absolutely true, you can't go wrong with the high heat paint. In my experience, standard good quality (and not oil based) paint will absolutely, positively, without a doubt, not bake and flake off engine cases, cylinders or heads if prepped right. Anything will flake if not prepped right.

Header pipe, now that's something different. I powder coated mine high heat black. Never had a head pipe finish last with any spray bomb, even after sandblasting, especially on a dirt bike.

Prep it properly, and you'll be fine.

And no, I didn't just sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night, either. ;)
Good luck.
