2002 warrior- starts right up, runs and then starts to pop and backfire, quits. Starts right up again, but still popping and backfiring.

Changed plug, disconnected e-brake switch, and clutch switch, took carb off and cleaned it, still no change. New stator assy one year ago. Help!

Are there any symptoms of a bad CDI ? I know there is no way to test them.

Usually if a cdi is bad, it won't give you anything. When they start to go they'll burn up, enough that you can actually detect a burnt smell if you take a whiff of it. If you're getting any spark out of it at all, which you are, i would look elsewhere first.

Are you sure it's not just losing fuel when it's cutting out? Like from a stuck or slow float valve not allowing enough fuel in? It's kinda hard to troubleshoot things like this over the net, sorta have to hear it and feel it to know what the problem is.

Well, after cleaning the carb twice with no improvement, it finally stopped starting up at all. Checked for spark, and getting none, so I guess my 1 year old stator is fried. This seems to be common problem with Warriors, what is the best stator to get that will last ?

I don't want to do this every year.

The stock one never gave me any trouble on my 2001, never replaced and it's still going strong. And my warrior wasn't a well maintained one before I owned it. I think no matter what kind you get, it's going to be hit and miss. Ricky Stator has a decent reputation, but then i've heard people saying that all they're good for is burning up. Whether that statement has merit or not, i don't know.

Personally, i'd just get a cheap one on ebay and take my chances with it. Might as well go the cheapest route possible if it's going to be a crap shoot anyways.

What makes you so sure it's the stator though? Could be the CDI, coil, wiring, etc. At least ohm out the coil and make sure it's close to the specs listed in the service manual.

the stator is an RM Stator, and I can't get the req'ts for the test, no response from the manufacturer. It's different from the stock one.

Check it compared to the stock specs then. Even if it isn't stock, a stator is a stator. Normally when a stator is bad it's going to be way off spec, either an open circuit or nearly a complete short.
