My '02 Warrior has had this top end "tap" . I have adjusted the valve clearance 3 times. I know I have it right. Only thing I notice odd is when I go to TDC, the "T" shows through the hole, the valves are slack, but the index mark on the cam gear is about 1/4 inch to the right of the index mark on the head. The quad runs strong and smooth. It doesn't tap at an idle, just at higher RPM's and sounds more like it's timing chain related than RPM related. I also checked the timing chain tensioner- it looks great. Can it be timed wrong? What else could this tapping be?
Any help will be appreciated!!

That's normal if you can't get the mark to perfectly allign, I had the same problem. I just replaced the starter clutch and stator so I know the keyway didn't sheer on me (on the magneto). The closest I could get it is a half a link off, and that was also with a new cam chain and tensioner. The tap sound that you hear is normal, our motor has two big valves as opposed to more smaller ones like the newer machines, so you'll always hear that sound. It'll tap much louder with a aftermarket cam if you don't already have one. Basically you want to make sure the cam chain isn't stretched and the magneto keyway isn't sheered, other than that it's fine if you're a half link off or so, just get it as close as possible.

Thanks Boxhead. I hope your right. This noise has gotten more prominent over time. I got the quad used with the White Bros pipe on it and it was jetted. It has always ran better than a Warrior should, maybe it's cammed. IDK. I'll just run it and when it gives out I'll know what's up! lol
How would you know if the mag keyway was sheared? Would it run any differently?
Thanks again,
Sherri

if the key sheared the chances of it running go way down because the pickup and sources coils would tell the cdi to spark at the wrong time. i agree with boxhead , my warrior has a bit of a tick also its the nature of the beast.

Our motors have rockers too, forgot the newer machines don't even have them. Don't forget to check valve lash every so often, the tick will get louder as the lash increases, and if too much it will mushroom the valve stems. I would assume the more aggressive cams would do this easier since they slam the valves harder.
