Warrior starting to smoke

So my warrior just got rebuilt and it was good for about 2 tanks of gas now when I beat on it. It smokes a little when idling and when you give it gas. It's not that bad but still the guy rebuilt the whole top end. New rings and all. I noticed about 2 weeks ago it smokes when it starts from a cold start but used to go away. What could cause this.


I broke it in the right way and waited to get on it until pretty much he end of the second tank.

Also it doesn't smoke all the time it's wierd.


There is a pretty loud tick coming off it as I mentioned earlier I can't tell if it got worse or not.
 
Why do people continue to think that babying the engine off a rebuild is the way to go?

Anyways, perhaps your rings are aligned. Did you re-hone the jug when you did the work?
 
well i was told from the guy who rebuilt it and works for the local atv shop to not beat on it for like a tank. anyway no it was not rehoned just got a top end kit, rings valve seals, that kind of stuff.
 
mmm is it oil smoke or possibly fuel smoke... maybe its just rich... generally we blame valve seals when it smokes on start up but you said they are new....

deadlast... i heard once and i tend to believe that the rings are always spinning inside the engine... i dont mean they are sitting there like a top but they dont stay in once place either... thats why on a two stroke with bike ports they "pin" the rings, that way the ends dont catch the ports... what do you think?...

also about breaking in... i go for the method of 3/4 throttle beating... works for me...
 
How can you tell if it's fuel smoke and running rich? I can't smell anything but is there another way to see?
 
Hmmmm I guess it's running rich then. I noticed recently too that I can't start my warrior with the choke all the way out it needs to be half choke. Is my carb going?
 
im not really saying its running rich but with new valve seals and rings there has to be something going on... i did a quick google search to make sure i was right with my colors (which i was) and this is what i found... i couldnt say it much better so im cutting and pasting... of course this is for a car but same idea

Blue Smoke: Blue smoke is caused by engine oil entering the cylinder area and being burned along with the fuel air mixture. As with the white smoke, just a small drop of oil leaking into the cylinder can produce blue smoke out the tailpipe. Blue smoke is more likely in older or higher mileage vehicles than newer cars with fewer miles.

How did the engine oil get inside the cylinder in the first place? The car has many seals, gaskets, and O-rings that are designed to keep the engine oil from entering the cylinder, and one of them has failed. If too much oil leaks into the cylinder and fouls the spark plug, it will cause a misfire (engine miss) in that cylinder, and the spark plug will have to be replaced or cleaned of the oil. Using thicker weight engine oil or an oil additive designed to reduce oil leaks might help reduce the amount of oil leaking into the cylinder.

Black Smoke: Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Another term for excess fuel is "running rich." Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor.

How did the fuel get into the cylinder in the first place? Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil as in the white smoke example to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil. Call your mechanic and advise him of what you have found.
 
btw white smoke is antifreeze/ water and is actually steam but that doesnt apply to a warrior obviously
 
id say its your cylinder, always always always hone when doing new piston rings whatever, i ghot all my head work and hone job done fro 29$ plus he sandblasted it to make the outside all cleeaann ad pretty :)
 
hmmm it doesnt seem to be blue? just white smoke that disappears almost instantly after exiting the exhaust. I have been keeping checking the oil level and it didnt move one bit to my seeing. Ohh well im just gonna run it. It seems to only smoke when i beat on it.
 
ya know have you tried getting gas at a different station, some stations have a lot of condesation in the tanks. i dont know if it would help but i only get gas from heavily freqented stations cause they go threw more fuel so the content of water will be lower. trust me an underground tank will get water in fuel, usually diesel more but the gas has small amounts of water in it to.
 
hmmm maybe i will try that next time. yea i dunno i just hope everything is good with the quad it has a lot of power and is fun to ride.
