So...
I'm starting to finish things up my Hybrid, and was looking for some feedback on where I should mount my headlight?

Now I know it's a small light but you have to remember that the IT490 only has a 30 watt, 6 volt lighting coil.. I figure that the smaller light housing, with a 25 watt halogen bulb should throw enuf light to see in the dark?

Here are the 2 spots I thought would be best:

First under the hood?

Second was on the bars? I thought this would be cool, cause the light will point where your going..

i would make a cover for it just to be safe plus it might look even better with the cover imo

BARS! Looks terribly stupid down low. As a single light atleast. Make something similar like the lt230 quadsports used to have. Always thought they looked knarley.

Lmao.. Great minds think alike man.

When I looked at it the first thing that came to my mind was the old LT250r I had as a kid.
And the surround that it had to protect the light housing was exactly what I had in mind.. I don't think something like that would be to hard to fab up?

The light I have is a lot smaller though. But I think it will help to concentrate the beam, and throw more light with a low wattage bulb.
I really wish the lighting coil had enuf power for 2 lights.

It's too bad you can't rig up a battery and a charger for it and run the lights off the battery...

I could just set it up with a battery, and run 12 volt lights. Charge it when I'm done riding..
But I'm try'n real hard to save weight in every way I can.

looks good on bars but another thought would be to mold it into the hood grill? just a thought

Yep I had thought about that as well.. But my old hood isn't very strong anymore, and I think it would kinda flop around in there. Or the vibes would compromise any fiberglass work I would have to do.

i agree with everyone with light on the bars and i think you are right about the fiberglass not holding up, at least not for very long lol

Can always try to rig up a pair of leds using the stock headlight frame.
I never got headlights with the quad when I bought it. (I really don't like the look of the 1st gen headlights anyway, and they wouldn't suit the build)

Anyway.. I did some research on 6 volt LED's last night.
First off no one makes a 6 volt H3 LED bulb. Any other 6 volt LED's don't throw enuf light to use as a headlight.. So I'm stuck with the 25 watt halogen for now.
But if I was to go 12 volt, and use a battery. LED's would be a must!
They make 12 volt H3 LED bulbs that look really bright.

I haven't yet confirmed this, but you should be able to replace the lighting coil with one off an lt500r. They are 12v 85w stock and I believe 52mm eye to eye (that's the measurement I haven't confirmed on a 490 motor). Ricky Stator makes one for the LT500R that is 130w and something like $40. You should be able to run as big and bright as you want at that point.

If you swap the lighting coil to a 12v unit, get a regulator/rectifier and wire the way trail tech shows in this pdf http://gallery.trailtech.net/media/instructions/lights/regrec/010-ELV-71.pdf

http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_L31.html was my original source for believing this swap can be made. Followed by http://www.hpi.be/applistlist.php?writeimg=L31&select=L&clr=c Supposedly the IT465, IT490, YZ465, YZ490 & WR500 should all share the lighting coil mounts with the 2 YZ's not actually having lighting coils stock. The WR500 (same motor as the YZ490) came with a lighting coil in place even though the lights were not mounted stock.

Hmmmm.. That's very interesting, thanx for sharing that bro.
I have found a shitload of info about Yami bigbore lighting systems, but this one is a first for me.

I measured my lighting coil, and it's about 53mm eye to eye. So it would be damn close!
I would have to wonder about the height, and width of the 500r coil though? Would it actually fit without rubbing on the mag?
