so i was changin my oil today and when i took to drain plug out of th bottom of the engine the screen that sits inside the spring was smashed down??? also i got little metal shavings in the screen and in the oil filter...

this sucks ass

another thing ...while its running when u very first start it ..in neutral
if you pull the clutch handle u hear some funny rotation noise from the clucth side case ...also while its cold you can hear some type of tapping noise on the left side of the motor ...once it warms up it goes away

now i know this isnt right ..so any ideas off the top of your head?

i have a new timing chain coming , so i guess i'll see the damge here soon , man i hope it isnt anything too bad ........

What kind of metal shavings? Alluminum, steel . Start pulling engine covers,do some visual checkin.

well i found out why the screen in the drain plug was smashed ....some moron(me)...opps
put it in upside down ....i have no clue why i did it last time i changd my oil i guess i got side tracked ... hell i dont know ... but as for the shaving ......i dont know what they are .. there little and shiny thats all i know

Ive put mine in backwards too , rushed for time before a race .

no as far as i can tell they arent stickin to a magnet ... being as they are covered in oil ...but i have a hard drive magnet(very strong) and they wipe right off of it ..this is what i got (sorry for the huge pic just wanted as much detail as possiable)

any possibility those are shaving froms the airbox mod you made?

hmm .. i guess its possiable ... but i doubt it .. i clean/sanded/cleaned the hell out of it b4 i installed it ....

Humm, I don't have a spring or filter in the bottom of my oil drain, perhaps I should look to buy those parts.

How does your filter look? Does it have the shavings stuck in it too or in that area? Surprised if those made it through your filter. I say pull that clutch cover off and give it a good look. Or first you can change the filter and drain all the oil out (as much as you can) Get a towel up in that hole and wipe the bottom of the case around the drain hole too. Put on a new filter, throw in new oil. Run it (idling for a couple minuets, enough to get the oil cycled once or twice) Re-drain the oil through a very fine strainer (if its clean you can re use it, strain it a couple times and clean the strainer each time) and look at your new filter, if your clean, I'd say no worries, could be clutch or case slag, if you still have shavings then time for an engine inspection.

This the first oil change you gave it since you've had it? Any idea how oil the oil is that in there already? Also, check your timing.

was this engine rebuilt recently? like right before you got it? looks like regular break in shavings like i had when i rebuilt mine, had them for a couple of oil changes before hardly anything was in the filter or sittin in the drain plug. just an idea. but the shavings do look a little on the larger side for break in material, but hard to really compare.

no recent rebuild that i am aware of ...shvings in the oil filter and in the drain plug .... mostly in the filter

the oil was about a month old ... 8 or 10 rides..

the noise i am talkin about coming from the clucth cover is what has me concerned that its somethin bad ...

it only doesnt it when u pull the lever...and only when it cold

it still runs strong ... no smoke of any kind ....

but somethins not right here .. ive read else wear about the clucth basket breakin off an leaving metal shaving everywhere ... but i dont know yet ....

read this on another site >>>>>>>05-26-2009, 08:02 PM
Also can be aluminum shavings or steel shavings. Usually aluminum shaving mean the cam chain is wearing on the side of the case, the chain is worn and needs replaced ASAP before it wears out the small sprocket in the crank.

ok well i pulled the stater cover off and didnt see any shavings in the stater housing or the fly wheel housing

also pulled the cam chain tensioner it still has about a half inch off travel left

didnt pull the fly wheel because i dont have a puller so i cant see the small sprocket yet...

this is what it all looked like ...

havnt pulled the clucth cover yet got to late on me i may do that tomorrow

this is what i looked like

also where can i get one of there fly wheel pullers? locally ....

will another type of puller work or is there another name for it ?

can i get one from advance auto or oreillys or auto zone?

^ that might work. Give it a try. If your goin through all this trouble, you might as well just replace the cam chain anyways. From the looks of your tensioner, its pretty stretched anyways. Go with a DID chain. Gotta get the cam cover off, and take the cam sprocket off.

yea im replacing the cam chain... but i got a wisco...i got it at a REALLY good deal , so i couldnt pass it up
it should be here today ...why do people say not to go with wisco for a cam chain ?? but yet just about everyone goes wisco with pistons??

also got one of these REALLY CHEAP gonna weld it this weekend... i guess my home made muffler will be a spare
