Hey gang! Just put in a new stator and coil. Got it started but it's spitting and backfiring. What do you think. I was thinking timing but don't know how to adjust it. I got a 2002 warrior. Any help would be great.

Hummm. What ur carb setup as (jetting) and how is your flow set up (intake and exhaust). Adjusting the time is super easy. Pull the cam sprocket cover off and take the timing mark cover off as well (on top of the clutch case). The cam sprocket has a mark and there is a lil bump on the top of the cam housing, line the sprocket up with the bump. Look in the hole on the clutch case and you should see a small T. If not the you are not in time. To set it, leave the T mark and fit the sprocket to line up with the bump.

I honestly don't know what work if any was done before I bought it. I can tell you it has a Cobra exhaus pipe. Before I did the work it ran great but I was having trouble starting it after it was warm and then finally it owuldn't start at all. After reading up on this site I decided to replace the stator and coil. AS it turns out my battery sucks and I still had to Jump it with my Tundra to get it going. Then I was left with popping and sputtering. Could I have screwed up the timing while installing the stator or do you think my problems lie eslswhere? P.S. If you can't tell already I'm new at the whole do it yourself thing.

as deadlast described, check your timing. wouldnt hurt to check it just in case. with the popping and sputtering, sounds like youre having a fuel issue. pull the carb and clean it. would even be a good idea to change the air filter or clean it if you can. when you clean the carb you could also check the jets to see what size you have to know whether the stock jets are in or they have been changed. when you have the carb open do the accel. pump mod too. you can find that in the tutorials section. good luck

I appreciate all the feedback. I'll tackle the carb this weekend. Just to clarify.....is it even possible that I effected the timing while installing the stator? If it's more than unlikely I'll start with the jets and so on. I read up on the carb threads and am starting to get the picture. Thanks again , Doc

Oh, also check your carb boot for tears. I bet that what it is.

Timing and stater replacement, virtually imposable but I've heard crazier stories.

Ok, the timing is good. After that i got the balls to pull out the carb and begin to take it apart. Tracked down a great manual step by step on bluetraxx and started in. I seaerched this site first but couldn't find it, Anyway, What I think is the pilot jet is stuck!!!! It looks as thought the guy before me has been in the carb and mangled a few things. Can i get this out? The slot is almost stripped and it spins but doesn't back out. Also, How does the valve seat assembly come out? I removed the screw but it won't move. Next question.....when is it time for a new carb???

dude check carb boot for tears thoroughly. pull it off flex it a bit believe me i have had 4-5 of them torn and it will drive u nuts then u will feel like a dummy when thats all it is. then if its a small tear buy a new one or do what ive done, some 2 part epoxy then wrap in electical tape. makes it stiff but it wont leak

OK, I checked the carb boot as much as I think I could and I saw no cracks. I can't get two of the jets out of the carb and I think I'm going to bite the bullet this time and bring the carb into the shop. :'( I hate to give up but I want to ride!!!!!!! :) ON a differnet note. I have a 1996 RT 180 also and can't find a good forum. Any leads?
