So ive been busy lately, work, school, and the girlfriend. But Yaa know me I cant leave well enough alone. So ive been tinkering with my truck and seem to be getting closer to driveable. So here's what it is,

79' Chevy c10 single cab long bed.
327 sb with a r700 and 3.08 gears
650cfm Rochester carb, edlebrock performer manifold
Xtream k&n filter with outerwares
vortec heads
Keith black flat top pistons
headman ceramic headers
duels with cross over tube and glass packs
and traction bars.

Tocome
2-3" drop/leveling
tinted Windows
wildwood disc brakes all around
Cf hood
sway bars
and someday ill swap it over to a 6spd with a ls motor

Ill get pics up im the morning

Ah, and old square body. Sounds nice. I can't wait to start my truck, 49 gmc. Or my father's for that matter , 59 apache. Did you run a high lift cam in it? I only ask because those vortecs have limited left without mods. Just wondering if you did any.

It was a rv torque cam, I dont remember the specs on it, I have the build sheet here ill see if I can scan and post it too

Cool, man. Those vortecs are SUPPOSED to be able to handle 400hp in stock form without more than just some port cleanup. I am thinking about using them on my 49, especially since I can get em out of the junk yard for $100. But with the cam I'm looking at I will prob have to mod the valve seats and turn down the hight and diameter of the valve guides. By the time I do that, put in better springs, and get em rebuilt I may as well just buy new aluminum edelbrocks.

the truck has been setting a while so its going to need a few other parts ie speedo cable, windshield wiper fluid bottle.

[note] the headers in the pic are not the ceramic headers because you aren't supposed to use ceramic headers for break in on the motor.

Looks better than either of our trucks! I prob wont get started on mine untill the fall. Looks like we have to move the business and I'd rather roll the truck to the new location (right across the street) then move it in pieces and loose something. The Apache has a 73 350 in it. Turns over, has factory cast iron intake and q-jet, w/headers and a saginaw 4spd. We will prob get it runing and maybe lot drivable in the next couple of months. That apache isn't going to be a body off like my truck, so may come along faster than expected. Your truck looks good, btw. Gotta love the old square body. Looks like a solid foundation.

I personally like to leave everything close to factory. Makes it more of a sleeper, I think anyway. I hate to see items that "made" the vehicle taken off. Like watching that rediculass overhaulin show and they strip every little molding, emblem, badge, etc... off. That was part of the character, leave it alone!!! LOL.

Ill leave the locks and mirrors forsure but the trim is chipping and I dont like the way it curves up front I think I would leave the wheel well molding too, regardless of what I do its getting lowered and a roll pan because I saw one done right and fell in love!

I can go for that. I think putting a racing stripe in place of the body side molding would be neat. I'm not a huge fan of lowered vehicles. I'm going to leave my truck factory hieght, and I'm leaving the factory I beam in the front. Non of that mustang 2 ********. It's GM so it stays GM. I'm gunna put in a sway bar and steering stablizer, then I'll do some camber tweeking on the alignment rack. Going to run a 12 bolt locked rear with 3.48ish gears and a th400 with the 350 outta the 59 apache. I picked up a 327 with the 49 and was gunna use it, but, my dad wants to go old school with his apache so I decided to make the old man's day and swapped my 327 for the 350.

The way around the Vortec valve guide machine work nonsense is with Comp 26918 behive valvesprings, 795 retainers & 614 (+.050) locks. This Will allow for cams with up to .550 lift. The beehive springs use a smaller diameter retainer & this retainer is shorter in measured height thus allowing more clearance.
Using this package Will also work well for a healthy Hydraulic roller assuring enough spring pressure to control the heavier roller valvetrain.
Unported Vortec heads Will support 400hp on a 350ci engine, it takes a good "RPM" intake, 650cfm carb (I like the Speed Demon) headers, 9.5:1 compression, a good hydraulic roller with 220-230* duration @ .050 , .520-.550 lift & a 110-112* lobe separation. Should still have decent street manners.
I've seen 350's with Vortec heads, the aforementioned mods & GM hotcam make 405hp. I've also seen a 406 with Vortec heads & Lunati 230/230, .480/.480 cam with an "RPM" intake & 750 carb make 425hp & 525 lb-ft of torque. They're decent budget heads & can be ported to make really good power. I've seen a 360ci SBC make 460hp with them ported & larger valves. The setup woulda worked great in something a lil lighter. Good luck.

That's what I think I'm going to do, figured that there was a spring and retainer combo out there that would work. Was going to talk to comp about it, since I'm looking into getting one of there cams. I was going to go with the hydraulic roller route, but MAY go with a hydraulic flat tappit. Going to use an edelbrock rpm air gap intake, may just go with the standard rpm unit, and 650-700 cfm carb. I don't know if I will use headers or sanderson performance exhaust manifolds. You can get em in 1 3/4", with (I'm trying to remember) 2 1/2" collectors. Now, my dad is gunna build his 327 with double hump or old bowtie heads, cast iron gm intake (may try to find an old weiend high rise) his own custom modded q-jet, might go with the L79 vett cam, and wants to use a duel point corvett dist. Like I said, he's goin old school.

Ceramic headers dont release heat to the engine bay, so the motor holds little more temp until broke in, and with the motor break in going to generate extra high temps its best to use the normal stuff till its broken in.

Thanks for the explanation, but it looks and sounds like "Smoke and Mirrors."

Keep us posted with the build......

sweet squarebody! and im a fan of the mags too! [had a set on a 65 falcon and a lowrider back in the day...love them, they are classic!] downside is the conistant polishing. loved my 85 big block lowered dually i had....ran 10.16 in the eighth! pretty quick for a 4 door dually. Keep us posted!

nice project, let me know when your ready for an LS swap i have a hook up on LS motors

Thanks! And dang thats a hot dually!!

I will be sure to keep you in mind! I am very tempted to build a ls from the ground up for it but that will b much later on.

You could always find a wrecked 8.1 like my gmc has. It's an animal. I break the assend loose all the time.

I have a 350 4bolt main that i built... looking for a '72 short box chevy to set it in :).
4 bolt block.
Lunati Voodoo 60105LK (cam kit)
weiand hi rise single plane intake.
064 double hump heads (64cc chamber, 2.02 intake, 1.94 exhaust)
hyper flat tops steel reinforced wrist pins (about 10:1 with my heads)
eagle forged crank
comp cams dual valve springs
harland sharp 1.6 ratio aluminum roller rockers.

gotta find me a truck lol
