I picked this 97 up on Sunday... it is missing a few things and she's been sitting outside for a few months.

Missing Stator and cover.

Brought the pipe with me to work on Monday to blast it clean.

Cool cool. That will be a fun rebuild. Its pretty rough. I love seeing threads like this. Givin the old war dog a second chance on life.

Yeah I may buy some parts from your "Red Headed" but I've got to get what I have built back up... I tore the engine down today and need to get the cylinder bored to 85mm it is at 84mm now but there is some pitting in the wall. Thinking about going with the JE 12:1 85mm piston. Will that work well with the Web 88 grind cam? Also thinking about putting the pull start case on, if I do can I retain the electric starter and just have the pull as a back up? I would love to convert it to kick start but seeing as how that isn't possible.

Shiny new cam that I pulled out and will not be re-using:

Does anyone know of a way to measure the camshaft other than to reinstall it into the head and put a dial indicator on the valve face?

if you do dd the pull start, you also need to get the a de-comp valve cover.

A machine shop should be able to measure that cam for you out of the head, as they will have the proper tools.

A 12:1 piston need to run on high octane or race gas. And if you bump your comp up that high, your going to need and get the HD valve spring kit as well.

Is the 88 grind a .390 cam? I forget.

Yeah the 88 grind is the .390. I know that I will have to get a valve spring kit, which I plan to do anyways along with new valves and seals. I was trying to find an 11:1 piston but I haven't been able to locate one yet. If I would need race gas for 12:1 I definitely won't be using that one. I would like to use the .390 cam and stay on 93 octane. But I will be using a 85mm bore more than likely, I still have to bring the cylinder to the machine shop to make sure it'll be okay I don't think the pitting is that deep so 85mm should be okay. What piston would you recommend Deadlast?

I run a JE 10.50:1 on 93, with a fully built head and it runs awesome! 366 is a good choice, which from the looks of it is ur only choice, unless you wanna get it resleeved. Might wanna check on the internals of the motor, cause if that cover has been off when it was outside god only knows whats in there. I believe i have an extra stator cover.

yeah I saw that one... I was kinda trying to find an 11:1 but I really don't think that I will know the difference of the .5. I would also like to just say thanks to all you guys. You are helping me out a lot. Thanks.

Not a prob. JE doesnt make the 11:1 anymore, you might get lucky and find one thou. Hows the crank and rod feel?

I have it completely apart. The only thing that was hurt from moisture is the piston and cylinder. The valves are a little nasty so they are getting replaced but the head is fine as is the bottom end. I am going to need the magneto/flywheel the stator and cover. But if you have an extra cover I would happily take it off your hands.

Yupp i do have an extra one, just checked. It has a stator off an 02 on it but not sure if its good.

yeah, the JE 10.5:1 is a good piston. They don't make the 11:1 anymore as 87 said, I run one and haven't seem or heard of many other people that do as well.

I have a stator cover as well. *7 beat me to the sale. I have a bunch of cheap ass parts for sell in the forsell section of you need other stuff.

oh and start soaking those gally sleeves in PB or oil now on your case, they look pretty rusted in there.

To do the pull start conversion, you also need the decompression exhaust rocker AND aforementioned rocker cover from the '87-88 machine. They are different than yours. You can leave the intake rocker alone if it's good.

You will not pull start that sucker easily without it, especially with a fresh head of compression.

I would highly recommend disassembling the entire head and checking the valve seats/guides and cam bearings (both of them) while you're there. My valves were in fair shape (seats were kinda beat), guides excellent, but the factory valve job was horrible and required some attention with a cutter. Just lapping wouldn't have fixed it.

I won't do the pull start then... Thanks for the info though Moto. Way ahead of you on the head though.

Pulled the valves out and cleaned it up a little. I need to get a new stone to polish the runners. I also need to order new valve seals.

Sweet.
Seals should come with your gasket kit. I used a Namura kit for my top end only job, was very pleased with the quality.
Do a search for "porting" here. A couple of guys have done nice jobs on their ports and chambers. Doesn't take much time at all with a rotary file and some sandpaper to knock down those valve guide bosses and such...

Free power.
