If it weren't for the 5mph impact bumpers they wouldn't be so ugly. But it has a solid 350/350/10 bolt. And the sub frame for my 49. Can't wait to get the engine on a stand and pull the pan, hopefully it will be a 4 bolt main. Prob not, be my luck.

Well there is the chance that it is a 4 bolt, because when the emissons bs came about, gm would put truck engines in cars. Which was the wrong way to go about doing it, but since the trucks were usually outfitted with smog heads, and had milder cams for heavy work, they opted to put them in cars. I have the build sheet, and although it is hard to read, I swear it says 4blt on it. Has the lm4 engine code which was the same for the police cruiser novas. Too, bad this is a 4 door, beacuse we have all documentation on it, and our friend we bought it from was only the 2nd owner. We shall see.

Lucky... I have a lead on a 350 and a 400, small blocks. Waiting to hear back from the guy. He also has a set of ported double humps with roller rockers, 2.02/1.6 valves.

Here is my 49 and the nova.

Yeah I know, wishfull thinking. Kinda like, if I talk about it enough it will magically turn into one. I'll still build it as a 2 bolt. Be nice to be surprised when I pull the pan. I'm hoping to hear back about this 400 in the town our shop is in. And I hope it is a 4 bolt main. That'd be sweet. So, now my drive train components list is even bigger. 2 350's, the other is out of an LA built comaro, the 327 (built in 66 at the flint plant, where all the hight perf blocks were cast). The th350 in the nova, and it's 10 bolt, th400 on the shell, and the sag 4 speed in the 59. Which we are selling soon, btw.

nice lookin project!.
i dont like 400 small blocks... they're a breed of they're own... gotta have heads cut to fit them and idk rather have a 350 of a 305... hell even a 307 lol. i have a 350 already bored with .40 over flat tops that i'm finishing to set in the truck while i build a 302 out of the other 350 block. and the 283 is in reserve till i find just the right car to set it in :)

I know what ya mean. If my dad can get is 65 chevy II back, the 327 will be built for it. Forged flat tops, chromoly rings, maybe a ported set of double humps (if I get em) for nostalgia, high rise and a built q-jet. Not sure about cam choice, but keeping with the old L79 type cam would be plenty for my dad. Just a noice screaming small block, in a 2400lb car... With headers and duels by me. Well, maybe not the headers, but I would not mind making my own.

That is the only down side to a 400. But... I don't even know if I can get it, or if it is a 4bm. Lucky you have a 302. That is a screaming bitch!

well it's not a 302 yet.. gotta punch it out .30 over (needs boring) put some 302/327 forged dome tops in it and a 3inch stroke crank to make it a 302.
i'm not a fan of chromoly rings... yeah they last longer but the wear the cylinders more due to the hard as **** metal :p.
and about the building of headers... i'm fabing up a custom turbo flanged header for the yoter to use a hitachi ct20 turbo

400's only need steam holes in the heads, most modern and aftermarket heads are already equipped with em. A good lil 406 is hard to beat boss and girls!

Why do you think I'm pursuing it! Lol. Warriorgirl, you could always sacrifice the 283 crank and throw it in the 350 block.

... nope. it's small journal and the 350 is large... and the HP the 302 will be putting out i wouldn't trust a 50ish year old cast crank thats made 350+hp for the past 10 years

I was pretty certain that they make main bearings to fit a small journal crank to large journal blocks. But if that crank has been handling 350 horse for that long, I doubt I'd trust it, too.

they do BUT i dont trust those either lol. i'm VERY picky when building a high performance engine.
Got the carb in today! i'm very happy with it.

Looks good. No fresh engine paint or engine compartment detailing? I would consider using the small to large journal bearings if I was only looking at making a 350ish horse engine. Anything 400 and above I'd get a new crank. But, then there is no sense in building a 350 horse 302, when you can get way more out of it. Lol. I still have a long way before I'm ready to even drop the engine in my 49. The way you see the pic is the way it sits now. Have had it since last November and have only gotten the cab cleaned out. That will all be changing this winter though. Taking the body off, my dad is going to start sanding and scrapping the cab, while I do the chassis work. Besides the nova sub, I'm most likely going to fully box the whole chassis, install a built 12 bolt, make my own traction bars, still up in the air about rear disc because the drums will suite me fine. After I get all that done it goes for powder coating. I do love chassis work. Can do that ALL DAY LONG. Gravy work...
