Well the hardest part of it, if you use this to get a tech job in a shop is they want experience. I took auto tech in high school, and had a year at a vo-tech so had like year and a half adn couldn't get a job as a starting tech, I did get in a shop to do the little crap that didn't pay on comission oil changes, warrenty work, tire work little odd and end. So I ended that career choice, I still love working on vehicles cause I am good at it. I have thought about doing it at home to help people out, just charge a cheap labor if they buy parts to help those that can't put theres in a shop.

Working on cars is fun, but doing it as a career isn't all it's cracked up to be unless you go specialized and work at a dealer. Working on commission only as a mechanic you'll be lucky to get close to 30k a year at a good shop. Also it sucks big time around Christmas because people don't get their cars fixed as much, they just drive until it breaks.

Yup I found that out when I tried it, guys told me unless you are fast and get more done in the time it calls for in the book you don't make money, but thats back in the day, now its computers that do the work and tell you whats wrong, where it is and how to fix it. Doing a vehicle repair once in a while is fun, too me the more of a challenge it is the more I want to do to conquer it. It can be hard work.

The computers really don't tell you crap lol, it's still a guessing game. I have a Vag-Com for VW/AUDI and it's nice to have to help diagnose, but really it's not always detailed enough to tell you exactly what's wrong, and as far as computer interfaces it's one of the most advanced out there and most detailed.

You are right my friend.....it will not tell you everything......
The "heavy" guys in computer cardom still make the big cash....
Ask me how I know this.....
I put a 1.8t in a Jetta last year...and made big coin out of my garage
because folks in TX were afraid to touch it....
Every butt has a seat.....there are many facets to Auto repair...still...

Jebby

Meh the 1.8t is easy :) I pulled the one out of my Passat and rebuilt it my self with a half assed setup lol.

My first VW ever.....I found it to be a VERY well built car...and my daughter will be getting a beetle for her first!

VW's are very well built. The Jetta less so then the Passat and other higher end models, but still very well built.

The local course is a 2 year program and it also helps the school has hook ups with lots of business's. It might even turn out that once I graduate that my buddy will be busy enough to hire me on at his shop. Right now hes busy, just not busy enough to hire a full time person. Im good and fast at it and have seen around here its a degree as an auto tech or 3 years exp. The school also sets everything up to get me ASE certified and you can be Im gonna get certified.

^ Awesome!!! Hope all goes well! I hope to go to MMI someday for when I open my shop. I'd like to take the Porsche class, and some motosport classes aswell. Good Luck!

No, Motosport classes at MMI, and Porsche at the car version of MMI. Same place, different name.

Never been a fan of schools like that. They usually cram 2 years worth of knowledge in to 1 year and they dont spend enough time on the big subjects.

^ That is exactly the problem. And you are taking the same class with 20893740892754982765298465928657824 other people. And half of them dont know what they are talking about, and their parents made them go there because they were sick of them in the house. I wont be working on motorcycles anywho. So IDK if it would be worth the money to go the school. It would be nice to really know and get the feel of the whole EFI/YFI system, I think that all the quads are going to have that within a matter of time... minus Honda lol

Those tech schools care nothing about your education, they just care about the money. My wife went to a tech school and she didn't even take all the required courses there was a major one missing and they still graduated her....

Yep I look at it as if they have to advertise on national TV, its all about the almighty $$. Id rather keep my money local anyways.

You should shop online for those, buy.com, amazon, ebay, so on. You'll save hundreds.
