I tighten the inner nut as tight as I can comfortably get it, spin that axle(it'll have resistance and be hard to turn). 2nd, I loosen that inner nut 1/2 turn, spin the axle again, then tighten the inner nut about 1/4 turn. 3rd, I spin it one last time to make sure it spins easily, if I need to tighten or loosen the nut slightly from there I will, then I tighten down the outer jam nut really good. And I never look back. Same thing as preloading the front wheel bearings of an older car or fullsize truck.

I haven't looked at the rear bearings, so I don't know.....

Are they tapered, like your older car or truck reference?

If they were tapered it would but I just do it outta habit. And that way if the left side bearing moved out some after sliding the axle in, it will help to bottom it out in it's bore.

I am sure there is a torque, but I just tighten them as tight as I can with a big adjustable wrench and check them once in a while before I ride.

I always use rustolium products. Never have had an issue. They have a nice primer that I use, too. Covers well, dries well, easily sprayed over.
