Not so fast my boy, the YZ465 is not a 4 speed, we were blessed with 5 gears! Maybe you're thinking of the big bore 400, pretty sure it was a 4 speed.
If it's a 5 speed then someone swapped the cases, and trans from an IT. All the YZ's before 85' were 4 speeds.. Trust me on that. I've done my homework.

So I ran into a nasty snag with getting this thing running. It turns out that I some how cooked the entire ignition system?

So it looks like it'll be a few more weeks before I can get it running..

Yah pulled a bone head move. I tacked the head pipe together with it on the motor. I think thats what killed it.
I bought a stator today, I might need a CDI to? I'll find out when my stator gets here, and I get it back together.

That's kinda wierd. I've welded plenty on atvs and have never had that problem. But, it is possible.

Well thats the only thing I can think of that might have killed it?

I tested it with my VOM. I have 4 volts at kickover on my lighting coil.. But the rest of the stator is totally dead.. Everything reads 0.

Ya just never know man, I had a bad ground on a truck fry one of my scan tools at work one day. It could have been such a simple thing as that.
This is my theory...
When I was tack'n up the head pipe it was leaning against the frame. (The ground was on the pipe)
I think when I struck an arch, it must have energized the frame somehow? The wires coming from the stator were wrapped around the frame to keep them out of the way. The ignition system on these motors is only 6 volt, (maybe 100watts).
It must have grounded out threw the wires that were touching the frame somehow though, and "poof"!! One toast stator.

So I bought a stator, and a CDI yesterday..
I'm looking into getting my lighting coil rewound to have more wattage for better lighting. The stock lighting coil makes 35 watts. I would like to have at least 75 watts so I can run 2, 35 watt 6 volt halogen H3 bulbs for headlights.

But yah to make a long story short, as soon as those parts get here, I should be able to fire this pig up.

HAH, I know man. I'm just bustin some balls. I just wanna see some progress. Less talk, more work.

Wow awesome thread. I just read it from start to me, here and now. Anything new with it? Did you get the parts? Video please!!!

Well I can't make a video just yet....
I did get the parts, and I do have spark. I even went as far as filling the bowl in the carb, and dumping some fuel down the sparkplug hole.
It fired, and ran for a few seconds. "Ding ding ding"

I'll have a full progress report in the next few days.

Ok..
So heres where I sit as of now.
I got my Kicker issue straitened out, and my wiring is about half done.

I had to take the exhaust apart to finish it up a bit, but I'm not to far off of getting this thing out of the garage for a rip.

This is the relief I made for my heel.. What do you guys think, does it look stupid??

I also took this picture for Yamahauler. This is how I repaired my front plastics with a soldering iron.
They still need some work but the weld is holding together really well.

Damn, Im excited to hear this beast run and see it in action. The kicker area looks fine, just clean up your cut and it will look better. Frame looks nice too.
