hmmmm.... seems like a ****** idea on gm's part lol
They were forced to do it by government regs.. The worst of the SBC heads were made from about 73', to 85'.. Though others may argue that the center bolt swirl port heads suck (like the late 80's corvette, and LO5 350 castings. 87' to 95'), they definitely weren't the worst made.

Well on top of trying to get the rest of the pieces I need to finish the 366 biuld on my warrior, which Im down to valves and gaskets. Cant/Dont want either of those pieces used!! LOL So close to having it done I can taste it.

Im trying to track down stuff for my Tbird. Ive already got K&N cone filter, home ported and polished head, Walbro 255hp fuel pump, and a Engle 55 grind cam. Im trying to find deals on the rest of the stuff though, you know me I never seem to pay anywhere near full price for anything anymore. Patience is the key to a cheap build. Im on the seach for an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, adjustable cam sprocket, 75 or 95 lb/hr low impedance injectors, some FMIC piping, and tuning of some sort, whether it be quarterhorse or a standalone EMC. One other piece thats up in the air yet is what turbo Im gonna go with, T3, T4, T3/T4(hybrid), or a Holeset HY35(late 90's, early 2000's cummins turbo out of an automatic truck). Oh and I can forget 1 big thing this is all needed for the fuel its gonna be running, E85 cheaper fuel with high octane. This setup is usually good for about 300 to 400hp out of a ford 2.3 turbo. A local buddy has a some what similar setup in his and he's running 12 sec quarters in an about 3500lb car(same as mine). So it should scoot pretty good.

only factory heads I like are double humps and power packs. I prefer to just buy a good set of after market heads since the cost of having factory heads worked gets up there close to the price of new heads and they still won't perform as well

What about Vortec, and LT1- LT4 heads?

The Vortec head is an excellent head right out the box. Many tests have proven that they'll make 400 HP untouched. I have seen a 360ci SBC make 460 with them in ported form. They're biggest downfall is the fact that they will crack between the chambers but GMPP & RHS have both addressed the issue with a thicker deck.
As for LT1/LT4 heads they are great heads but specific to the gen 2 SBC. When they're ported they rock, excellent power. I have seen solid roller 355 LT1's make 500rwhp but they're twisting upwards of 8000.

There are so many options out there for small block heads that you have to really sit down and compare head specs, and prices, as to what type of power and application you want to build. I found RHS has sweet heads for the 283, but... I'll be spending nearly 1200 on the pair. May still do it, but, it's not like I'd be running the car all the time professionally (hence why I'm tempted to port 305 heads). Dad's nova is so light, that a set of unported vortecs with the necessary springs and hardware on the 327, that it'll fell every bit like 400+ horse. I've been looking to the dart heads for my 350, again, so many options and prices...

Just why do you like the power packs? Small chambers yes, but, super small valves, and runners. I have a set on the floor.

mainly because they're getting to be pretty rare. squish some 2.08 intake and 1.60 exhaust valves in em and open the ports up a smidge and they can make some damn nice numbers. but like i said mostly just because of what they are

lmao.
I started some controversy.

I still think the LO5 heads are ok.
Definitely not the best.. But on a LO5 with the right springs, and a lunati bracket master flat tappet cam. We made 330 hp on a TBI setup. Which isn't bad for a motor that only cost $1200 bucks to build.
Of course we bumped the comp a bit, and had to get the chip reflashed. But that motor is still running. I drive it just about everyday.

About to start a Porsche 928 hybrid motor... Should be a runner......

Not doing any projects in my garage, but at the machine shop where I work we have a few. I just finished a Pontiac 389 complete. We put 400 pistons in it and a hydraulic roller camshaft. At the same time was alternating time on a Pontiac 455 that we put a stroker crank and aftermarket internals. It has Ram Air IV heads and also a hydraulic roller camshaft. Both engines were complete overhauls brought in on pallets all apart. I'm not 100% sure but I think both are going into GTO's. I will get some pics on Monday when I get back to work.

And I see it's in one of those trucks, I can recconize the master, booster, and ebcm from anywhere! lol

It's been a good truck. 91' GMC.
I just swapped a NV3500 5 speed into it.. Thats not an easy chore. lol

I have a 4 & 6 static drop kit for it, and I wanna do a 2 or 3" body drop.
Then I'll save my pennies for some bags..
It's an old work truck that out lived it's purpose in life. It's time to get crazy. lol
